Chennai: Bangladesh fast bowler Hasan Mahmud delivered a stellar performance, dismantling India’s top order in the opening Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Under overcast skies, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s decision to bowl first paid off as Hasan dismissed India’s key batters, including Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant.

Hasan Mahmud Dominates Indian Top Order

Hasan’s early breakthroughs set India on the back foot. He struck first by removing captain Rohit Sharma, who was caught in the slips for six.

Next, Shubman Gill departed for a duck, edging a flick shot to wicketkeeper Litton Das. Virat Kohli, too, fell for just six, becoming Hasan’s third victim as India struggled against the Bangladesh pacer’s movement.

Rishabh Pant Falls After Lunch

Following a brief recovery by India’s middle order, Hasan returned after lunch to claim the wicket of Rishabh Pant. The wicketkeeper-batter, who looked set on 39, played a loose cut shot, only to edge it behind. Hasan’s spell left India wobbling early in the Test.

Who is Hasan Mahmud?

The 24-year-old fast bowler has made waves since his international debut in March 2020. Initially a white-ball specialist, Hasan earned his Test cap earlier this year against Sri Lanka.

His standout performance came during Bangladesh’s historic 2-0 sweep over Pakistan, where he claimed a five-wicket haul and finished the series with eight wickets.

Hasan Mahmud’s Impressive Stats

Entering the Chennai Test, Hasan had already claimed 14 wickets in just three Tests at an average of 25. In white-ball cricket, he boasts 30 wickets from 22 ODIs and 18 wickets from 18 T20Is. His first-class record includes 63 wickets from 20 matches at an average of 28.76.
