Who Is Abdul Karim Telgi? On Whom ‘Scam 2003’ Will be Based

Entertainment: Hansal Mehta today revealed the dates for the most highly-anticipated web series, Scam 2003: The Telgi Story – second edition of Scam 1993: The Harshad Mehta Story.

Scam 2003 is a Hindi adaption of the book, Reporter Ki Diary – authored by journalist and news reporter Sanjay Singh.

The web series is all set to focus on Abdul Karim Telgi – mastermind behind fake stamp racket.

Who was Abdul Karim Telgi?

Started off as a fruit-stellar in Khanapur, Karnataka. His parents worked with the Indian Railways, but after his father died, Telgi was forced to start working for a living.

Later, he left for Saudi Arabia, only to return after and shifted to Mumbai to work as Travel Agent.

In 1991, Telgi got arrested allegedly for forging immigration documents for laborers looking for work in Gulf countries.

Fake Stamp Racket:

As the stamp papers were in dire need for different walks of the society, Telgi started forging stamp papers.

He would buy old printing machines in auctions and continued to print stamp papers. He sold them at Rs. 100 for stamp papers.

Along with fake stamp papers, Telgi started forging court fee stamps, notarial stamps etc. His clients included banks, brokerage, companies and insurance companies.

Got Arrested in 2001:

Telgi was arrested in 2001 and was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2007. Meanwhile, in 2002, he was tested position for HIV.

Died of Multiple Organ failure:

Telgi died in 2017 due to multiple organ failure but he was later acquitted by the Nashik court as they did not find enough evidence against him.
