MUMBAI: Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has voiced his support for the decision to appoint Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in 2024.
Speaking to the media on May 2nd, Agarkar downplayed concerns about Pandya’s form, emphasizing the invaluable nature of his all-round abilities.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup, with Pandya named as Rohit Sharma’s deputy.
Agarkar acknowledged Pandya’s return to action after a significant hiatus, noting his consistent participation in matches for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing IPL 2024 season.
Stressing the importance of Pandya’s fitness, Agarkar emphasized his irreplaceable role in the team and urged him to capitalize on his form.
“With his unique skill set, Pandya brings indispensable balance to the team, especially with his bowling prowess,” Agarkar remarked. He highlighted that Pandya’s fitness is paramount for the team’s success and expressed satisfaction with his performance in the IPL thus far.
In the current IPL season, Pandya has amassed 197 runs in 10 matches at an impressive average of 150.38, while also claiming six wickets at an economy rate of 11.00. Despite MI’s position near the bottom of the points table, Agarkar’s confidence in Pandya’s abilities remains unwavering as India gears up for the T20 World Cup.
