WATCH: Naseeruddin Shah Reflects On Fears Of Islamophobia Post 1999 Kandahar Hijack
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recently expressed his concerns about the 1999 Kandahar hijack incident, revealing that he feared it might trigger a new wave of Islamophobia.
Speaking at a press conference for the newly released film IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, Shah, alongside the film’s cast and crew, revisited the emotional impact of the hijacking.
Reflecting on the incident, Shah, who was around 50 years old at the time, shared, “The end of the century was marred by this crisis, and I remember being deeply disturbed. I feared it would provoke another wave of Islamophobia. Fortunately, it did not.”
He added, “I was terribly concerned about the consequences and had mixed feelings when the crisis was resolved. Even though the ordeal ended, I was left with a sense of unease, particularly because the resolution felt incomplete. The passengers and crew endured a harrowing experience, and there was no true closure.”
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack features an ensemble cast including Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, and Kumud Mishra, and is currently available for streaming.
