WATCH: MS Dhoni Opens Up On ‘Elder Brother’ Bond With Virat Kohli
Former Indian captain MS Dhoni recently reflected on his relationship with Virat Kohli, highlighting their strong bond despite the age difference.
Dhoni, who retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, praised Kohli as one of the world’s top cricketers and emphasized their connection as “colleagues” rather than a mentor-mentee dynamic.
Dhoni and Kohli, two stalwarts of Indian cricket, have been integral to the team for over a decade. Dhoni stepped down as Test captain in December 2014 and as captain in white-ball formats in late 2016, with Kohli taking over both roles.
Despite this transition, Dhoni remained an essential part of India’s white-ball setup and Kohli often sought his advice, particularly on DRS decisions, where Dhoni’s judgment was highly trusted.
Reflecting on their journey, Dhoni stated, “We’ve been playing together since 2008/09. Even though there’s an age gap, I wouldn’t call myself an older brother; we’ve just been long-time colleagues representing India. Kohli has consistently been among the best in world cricket.“
Fans have cherished the duo’s on-field synergy and off-field camaraderie, affectionately known as “Mahirat.”
Since Dhoni’s retirement, there has been a keen anticipation for their appearances together in the IPL.
Kohli has openly expressed his respect for Dhoni, acknowledging him for the opportunities he provided early in Kohli’s career and even reaching out personally after stepping down as Test captain. The mutual admiration between the flamboyant Kohli and the composed Dhoni remains evident, further endearing them to cricket enthusiasts.
