BIG! UNESCO Adds India’s Santiniketan In World Heritage List, Leaders Reacts

In a significant development, India’s Santiniketan has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on September 17 (Sunday).

Notably, the cultural site is situated in West Bengal’s Birbhum district and India has been striving for long to get Santiniketan the UNESCO tag.

Santiniketan is an iconic site – also known as the place where poet Rabindranath Tagore built Visva-Bharati over a century ago.

The decision to include Santiniketan in the list was taken in the 45th World Heritage Committee Meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

What is Santiniketan?

It is a university town located over 160 km from Kolkata. As per the official Website of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Santiniketan was orginally established as an ashram by Debendranath Tagore, the father of Rabindranath Tagore. It is a place for meditation of people of all castes and creeds.
