Tech Outage Forces IOC to Conduct Test Run Ahead of Paris 2024 Olympics
A global tech glitch this week served as an unexpected practice run for the Paris Olympics’ IT systems, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed on Saturday.
The incident, caused by a software update from cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, disrupted operations worldwide, grounding flights, knocking out broadcasters, and hindering access to essential services. The Paris Games organizers also encountered some issues.
“We faced some challenges initially, but they were addressed swiftly,” said IOC spokesperson Mark Adams, viewing the event as a “positive test” ahead of the Games’ July 26th opening.
This isn’t the Olympics’ first brush with tech troubles.Cyberattacks targeted the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games, highlighting the vulnerability of such large events.
“Cyber threats are a constant concern,” Adams acknowledged. “The Olympics are a prime target, and we have extensive safeguards in place, though I can’t disclose details. We’re confident in our preparedness, based on assurances from our teams and partners.”
The close call in Pyeongchang reinforces the importance of preparation, Adams stressed. “We can never be too ready, and we’re confident we can handle any challenges.”
Beyond Paris 2024, the IOC’s executive board also discussed France’s bid to host the 2030 Winter Games, which will be voted on next week. While recommended by the IOC in June, the bid lacks crucial guarantees, including public funding from specific French regions.
“This was discussed at the board meeting,” confirmed Adams. France’s proposal will be on the table next Wednesday for a two-game vote, alongside Salt Lake City’s bid for the 2034 Winter Games.
“France’s bid is strong and will be presented on Wednesday,” Adams added, acknowledging recent political turmoil in France as a potential complication. “The political situation adds some complexity, but there’s still time. We encourage everyone to wait until the vote.”
Despite these hurdles, the IOC remains confident in the preparations for both the Paris 2024 Games and a potential future Winter Olympics in France.
