Sonia Gandhi Opts Rajya Sabha, Priyanka Likely To Make LS Debut
NEW DELHI: With national elections looming, Sonia Gandhi, head of the Congress party, will seek a seat in the upper house (Rajya Sabha) instead of defending her long-held constituency in Raebareli.
This move fuels speculation that her daughter, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, might finally enter electoral politics through Raebareli.
Gandhi will run from Rajasthan, where the Congress has good chances of winning. This choice, over vacancies in southern states where the party governs, suggests the Gandhi family isn’t abandoning their Hindi heartland base.
This follows criticism of Rahul Gandhi contesting two seats in 2019, leading to losses in both.
The Congress suffered a crushing defeat in the Hindi heartland in 2019, with Rahul Gandhi losing Amethi. Sources hint at his potential return there and Priyanka replacing her mother in Raebareli.
Sonia Gandhi entered parliament in 1999 from Amethi, her late husband’s seat. She shifted to Raebareli in 2004, paving the way for Rahul.
She will join her mother-in-law, Indira Gandhi, in the Rajya Sabha, who briefly served there before winning from Raebareli.
