Shubman Gill Doubtful For First Test Against New Zealand Due To Injury – Reports
Star Indian batter Shubman Gill, who has been in remarkable form with three centuries in just eight Tests in 2024, is doubtful for the first Test against New Zealand, set to begin on October 16 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
According to a report from India Today, Gill complained of neck and shoulder pain, casting uncertainty on his availability.
The 25-year-old informed the team management of his discomfort on Monday, and a final decision on his participation will be made on the morning of the match.
If Gill is unable to play, India will have to decide between KL Rahul or Sarfaraz Khan as his replacement at the crucial No. 3 batting position.
Gill has been a standout performer for India since his Test debut in December 2020, amassing 662 runs this year alone, including three centuries and two fifties. His most recent century came against Bangladesh last month, highlighting his key role in the Indian batting lineup.
Adding to India’s injury concerns, captain Rohit Sharma revealed that pacer Mohammed Shami is also uncertain for the upcoming series due to knee swelling.
Shami’s fitness is a key issue, with the management aiming to ensure he is fully fit before allowing him to return to competitive cricket. Shami is currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Shami, but we won’t rush him back. It’s tough for a fast bowler to return from injury and immediately perform at his best,” Rohit Sharma said, expressing concerns over Shami’s availability for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year.
India’s preparations for the New Zealand series are now clouded by these fitness concerns, with crucial decisions pending for both Gill and Shami.
