Shalini Passi’s Unique Dental Tip: Why You Should Always Sip Your Soda With A Straw
Art collector Shalini Passi, a familiar face from Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives, has intrigued many with her unconventional approach to dental care—drinking champagne through a straw. This choice stems from her desire to protect her natural teeth while enjoying her favorite beverages, especially given that many of her friends opt for dental veneers.
Veneers are custom shells that cover teeth to shield them from damage, particularly from enamel erosion caused by acidic drinks. But is using a straw really effective in safeguarding your teeth?
Dr. Bibhakar Ranjan, a dental expert, weighs in on this practice.
He explains that sipping carbonated beverages, such as champagne and soda, through a straw can help reduce contact between these acidic drinks and the front teeth. “These beverages are inherently acidic,” Dr. Ranjan notes. “Using a straw prevents direct exposure to the incisors, which may lessen enamel erosion and decrease the likelihood of cavities.”
Additionally, drinking through a straw can mitigate tooth discoloration, particularly on the front teeth, which are most visible when you smile. This may be why Passi opts for this method, as she values her bright, sparkling smile.
In a collaborative Instagram post, Dr. Reshma Shah and Dr. Sagar Shah highlighted the importance of preserving enamel, noting that erosion can lead to increased temperature sensitivity in teeth. By using a straw, individuals can protect sensitive areas, thereby reducing the risk of discomfort.
However, Dr. Ranjan cautions that while a straw can offer some protection, it is not a complete solution. “Even with a straw, once the drink mixes with saliva, it can still come into contact with teeth,” he explains.
Moreover, frequent straw usage can have unintended consequences. Dr. Ranjan warns that continually holding a straw can lead to “smoker’s lips,” which are wrinkles around the mouth formed from repeated puckering.
His advice? Rather than solely relying on straws, it’s wise to limit carbonated drinks to once a week and enjoy them in moderation. This approach not only helps protect your teeth but also contributes to overall health.
