Poonam Pandey Death Saga: Company Involved In Actor’s Gimmick Issues Apology
MUMBAI: On February 3, 2024, the digital agency Schbang took to Instagram to publicly acknowledge their involvement in a controversial campaign aimed at raising awareness for cervical cancer, wherein model and actress Poonam Pandey staged her own death.
This initiative was conducted in collaboration with media outlet Hauterfly. In their statement, Schbang expressed remorse, specifically extending it to individuals who have been personally affected by cancer.
The statement conveyed, “Indeed, we participated in the campaign with Poonam Pandey to promote awareness about Cervical Cancer in partnership with Hauterfly. Firstly, we would like to offer a sincere apology, particularly to those who may have experienced emotional distress due to personal encounters with, or witnessing a loved one undergo the challenges of any form of cancer.”
The agency admitted to orchestrating the stunt, in which Poonam Pandey simulated her own demise, resulting in a substantial surge in online searches related to cervical cancer.
“Several may not be aware, but Poonam’s mother has courageously faced cancer. Having navigated the difficulties associated with combating such a personal illness, she comprehends the significance of prevention and the crucial role of awareness, particularly in the presence of an available vaccine” – the statement added.
They underscored the unprecedented attention garnered by the disease due to the campaign, noting, “This is the first time in the history of this country that the word ‘Cervical Cancer’ has been on 1000+ Headlines.” Despite the success in terms of increased search trends, the agency issued an apology for any distress caused by the unconventional nature of the awareness-raising campaign.
