Haldwani land encroachment case | Over 4000 Families Living on ‘Railway Land’ likely to be evicted, protest underway

The New Year 2023 was not a pleasing one for over 4,000 families living in unauthorised colonies near Haldwani railway station which is set to undergo massive encroachment process, following an order issued by the Uttarakhand High Court.

The Nainital district officials has informed that a total of 4,365 encroachments will be removed from the area. The directives from the High Court followed by constant announcement from the district administration has triggered series of protest in the area.

Meanwhile, Indian Express report quoted Rajendra Singh, Railway PRO, Izzat Nagar who informed that the process of demolishing the houses and other structures built on the 2.2 km strip of railway land.

“Around 10 days ago, the High Court judgement came to remove all encroachments on the railway land in Haldwani. There are 4,365 encroachments and we will serve a notice on Sunday through local newspapers,” said Mr. Singh. The official further informed that the residents will be given seven days’ time to shit, after that the action will be taken.

Earlier this week, thousands of residents took out candlelight march to register their protest. The occupants informed the media that the demolition drive will leave them homeless. Some of the families have been living in the unauthorised colonies for 40-50 years and several residents were born in the very houses which now under the demolition zone.
