Over 30 Opposition MPs Suspended From Lok Sabha For Protesting Over Security Breach
NEW DELHI: Thirty-one opposition Members of Parliament (MPs have been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Winter Session due to disruptions in the House.
Notable among the suspended MPs are Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress, T R Baalu and Dayanidhi Maran of the DMK, and Saugata Roy of the TMC.
While 31 MPs face suspension for the entire Winter Session, an additional three, namely K Jayakumar, Vijay Vasanth, and Abdul Khaleque, were suspended pending the report of the Privileges Committee. This trio had gone to the extent of climbing onto the Speaker’s podium to raise slogans.
The proposal for the suspension was put forth by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi and later endorsed through a voice vote in the House.
The decision follows persistent protests by opposition members regarding the security breach in Parliament on December 13. In response to the uproar caused by opposition MPs, the Lok Sabha adjourned for the day.
It is noteworthy that on December 14, a day after the security breach, 13 Lok Sabha MPs and one Rajya Sabha MP faced suspension for their “unruly conduct” during parliamentary proceedings.
Among the suspended Lok Sabha members are Manickam Tagore, Kanimozhi, PR Natrajan, VK Sreekandan, Benny Bahanan, K Subramanyam, S Venkatesan, and Mohammad Jawed. The sole Rajya Sabha MP facing suspension is Derek O’Brien from the Trinamool Congress.
