ODISHA hits a jackpot; GSI discovers huge gold mines in 3 districts

Odisha is once again in the limelight for all the good reason. The Geographical Survey of India has discovered 98 percent of the country’s chronic deposits, in the form of gold from Deogary, Keonjhar and Mayurbhaj.

State’s Steel and Mines Minister Prafulla Mallik on Monday informed the State Assembly that three gold reserves have been found in the districts in the state.

As per the statement laid in the house, the gold deposits have been found in the Adas area in Deogarh, seven places each in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.

According to estimate 1,685 kg of gold ore has been detected by the GSI experts along with the copper in Adas area. A survey by the directorate of mines and geology found gold reserves in Gopur, Gajipur, Kusakala, Adal and Saleikana, Dimirimunda and Karadanga areas in Keonjhar.

First survey in 1970s:

The first survey in the region was conducted in the 1970s and the 1980s, but the findings had not been published.

At present, India has three working gold mines in the country – Hutti and Utti mines in Karnataka and Hurabuddini mines in Jharkhand.

Notably, India’s gold production is around 1.6 tones a year. Last year, NITI Aayog conducted an extensive study to identify potential gold mines in the country. The large extent of reserves is located in South India, with 88 percent of reserves located in Karnataka alone.
