Nirbhaya’s Mother Calls For Mamata Banerjee’s Resignation Over Kolkata Rape-Murder Case
Asha Devi, mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim known as ‘Nirbhaya,’ has called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of failing to handle the situation following the August 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Speaking to PTI, Asha Devi criticized Banerjee’s response, stating, “As a woman, she should have acted swiftly against the culprits while fulfilling her duty as the state’s leader. She should step down for failing to manage the situation.”
Asha Devi further alleged that Banerjee is attempting to mislead the public. She referred to the chief minister’s recent protest march, claiming it was an attempt to divert attention from the issue rather than taking decisive action.
The march, organized by Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress party leaders, called for ‘justice’ for the RG Kar victim and the hanging of the perpetrators.
Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, has been arrested in connection with the August 9 crime, drawing comparisons to the horrific December 16, 2012, gang rape and torture of Nirbhaya.
Asha Devi stressed that such incidents will persist unless both state and central governments prioritize swift legal action and harsher punishments for rapists.
The Nirbhaya case led to nationwide protests, and despite years of legal proceedings, four of the six convicted attackers were hanged in March 2020.
