Neeraj Chopra To Undergo Surgery For Groin Injury After Winning Silver at Paris Olympics
Neeraj Chopra, who secured a silver medal in the men’s javelin final at the Paris Olympics on August 8, is expected to undergo surgery for a persistent groin injury. The javelin star will finally address the long-standing issue after deliberating over the decision for several months.
Chopra, who finished behind Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem at the Stade de France, has been grappling with a hernia that caused him significant pain.
Despite the injury, Chopra achieved a throw of 89.45 meters, his second-best ever, though it fell short of Nadeem’s Olympic record throw of 92.97 meters.

Chopra had initially disclosed his groin problem during the 2022 World Championships, and the injury has been a recurring issue since then. He carefully managed his participation in competitions leading up to the Paris Games, and his father also spoke about the injury concerns following the Olympic final.
Doctors had advised Chopra to undergo surgery last year, but he opted to delay the procedure in hopes of competing at the Olympics. Reflecting on his struggle, Chopra noted, “When I throw, I always focus almost 50 percent on my injury. We need to focus mostly on technique, but it’s really hard with this injury.“
Three top doctors have been selected to perform the surgery. In addition, Chopra’s coaching team is set for a significant overhaul.
