Municipal Corporation Approves Proposal To Rename Ghaziabad – Check 3 Options
GHAZIABAD: On Tuesday, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation approved a proposal to rename Ghaziabad, according to officials.
Mayor Sunita Dayal stated that the proposal, along with three suggested names—Harnandi Nagar, Gaj Prastha, and Doodheshwernath Nagar—will be forwarded to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who will make the final decision.
However, any name change will ultimately require approval from the Central government.
Dayal informed reporters, “A proposal to change the name of Ghaziabad was passed by an overwhelming majority of councillors. Many people have been urging for a name change, and a better name has been proposed. Following discussions with the board, a proposal will be submitted to the CM. The decision to change it will be his.”
Sunil Sharma, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Sahibabad constituency, disclosed that he had presented a proposal in the state Assembly last year, recommending Gaj Prastha as the new name for Ghaziabad.
In the meantime, Mahant Narayan Giri, the head priest of Doodheshwer Nath temple, conveyed to PTI that he had suggested the three names to the chief minister last year.
These names are rooted in the Mahabharata, as present-day Ghaziabad was once part of Hastinapur, Giri explained.
Ghaziabad’s history, he continued, was linked to a dense forest inhabited by elephants, known as ‘Gaj’ in Hindi. Hence, the city was referred to as Gaj Prastha.
