Mohammad Rizwan Likely To Succeed Babar Azam As Pakistan’s Next Captain
As Pakistan searches for a successor to Babar Azam, who recently stepped down as captain in both ODIs and T20Is, former Pakistan cricketer Mudassar Nazar believes that wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan is the strongest candidate for the role.
Despite Rizwan’s leadership skills, the team’s top management remains uncertain about his appointment.
In an interview with Cricket Pakistan, Nazar explained, “Pakistan has limited options now. They’ve tried several players except Rizwan, and they might have no choice but to make him captain. Although the inner circle isn’t fully convinced, Rizwan could be their only option.”
Earlier this week, Babar Azam announced his decision to step down from the captaincy via social media, citing his desire to “focus on my batting” and prioritize his “personal growth.”
Babar has faced increasing scrutiny due to his recent dip in form across formats. His leadership has been questioned following Pakistan’s underwhelming performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan’s struggles have continued in Test cricket, with a 2-0 home series defeat against Bangladesh under the captaincy of Shan Masood.

Mudassar Nazar believes Rizwan could provide stability as an all-format captain, saying, “If Pakistan opts for a younger player, it may lead to similar issues as with Babar. A senior player like Rizwan could lead while grooming a future captain.”
Pakistan’s Upcoming Schedule
Pakistan is set to face England in a three-match Test series, starting October 7 in Multan.
