Looking Forward: Elon Musk To Meet PM Modi In India Later This Month
Tech titan Elon Musk has officially set his sights on India, confirming a visit to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming weeks. This high-profile encounter fuels speculation about Tesla’s long-awaited entry into the Indian market, potentially including a manufacturing facility.
Taking to social media (platform can be replaced with “his social media platform” if you prefer neutrality), Musk expressed his enthusiasm: “Looking forward to meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!”
Scheduled for the week of April 22nd in New Delhi, this meeting follows their previous encounter in June 2023, held during Modi’s US visit.
Tesla has been actively courting Indian authorities, advocating for reduced import duties on electric vehicles (EVs) as they explore the possibility of a domestic factory.
Reports suggest Tesla is also exploring partnerships, with Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries a potential collaborator for a joint EV manufacturing venture.
In April, a Tesla team reportedly scouted locations for a proposed electric car plant, with estimates suggesting a $2-3 billion investment.
An official announcement of Tesla’s investment in India would be a major economic coup, not only for the country but also for Prime Minister Modi’s pro-business image. His administration has consistently prioritized foreign investment to bolster domestic manufacturing and create jobs.
Sources close to the visit indicate Musk will be accompanied by other key Tesla executives.
While India’s EV market remains nascent, it’s experiencing steady growth with Tata Motors currently leading the pack. However, with EVs only accounting for 2% of total car sales in 2023, the government aims for a significant increase to 30% by 2030. Musk’s visit could be a turning point in achieving this ambitious target.
