WATCH: Kangana Ranaut Clarifies ‘Emergency’ Yet To Be Cleared by Censor Board Amid Controversy
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut addressed rumors on X, clarifying that her upcoming film, Emergency, has not yet been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
The film, in which Kangana portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is set for release on September 6, 2024.
In the video, Kangana revealed that the CBFC has put the certification on hold due to death threats related to specific scenes.
“Rumors are circulating that Emergency has been cleared by the censor board, but that’s not true. The board initially cleared it, but certification is now on hold because of threats over scenes like Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the Punjab riots. There’s immense pressure on us to remove these scenes. I’m shocked by this situation and deeply sorry for the current state of thinking in our country,” she stated.
The controversy surrounding Emergency has led to calls for the film to be banned. In Telangana, the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, has accused the film of portraying the Sikh community as terrorists and anti-nationals.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy assured Sikh community leaders that the state government would consider banning the film, pending legal consultation, as confirmed by government adviser Mohammad Ali Shabbir.
Despite the controversy, Kangana continues to promote Emergency, which also stars Anupam Kher and is slated for release in September 2024.
