ISRO Chief Somnath Was Diagnosed With Cancer On The Day Aditya-L1 Was Launched
On the day of India’s historic Aditya-L1 mission launch into space, S Somnath, the esteemed Chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), received an unexpected diagnosis: cancer.
Speaking candidly in an interview with Tarmak Media House, Somnath revealed that during routine medical scans, a concerning growth had been detected.
Reflecting on the challenging period, Somnath disclosed, “There were some health issues during the Chandrayaan-3 mission launch. However, it wasn’t clear to me at the time; I lacked a comprehensive understanding.” It was only on that fateful day, coinciding with the Aditya-L1 mission’s momentous journey to study the Sun on September 2, 2023, that the diagnosis was officially delivered, rattling not just him but also his family and supportive colleagues.
The discovery of a growth in his stomach during the routine scan prompted immediate further investigations in Chennai, where it was confirmed to be indicative of a hereditary disease. Within a short span, Somnath was faced with the daunting reality of grappling with a significant health challenge alongside his professional duties.
Undergoing an operation followed by chemotherapy, Somnath navigated the arduous path of treatment with remarkable resilience. “It was a shock for the family. But now, I perceive cancer and its treatment as a solution,” he reflected, exhibiting a pragmatic outlook toward his illness.
Despite uncertainties surrounding his prognosis during the treatment process, Somnath’s remarkable recovery journey stands testament to his unwavering spirit.
After just four days in the hospital, he resumed his duties at ISRO on the fifth day, displaying unparalleled determination and dedication.
As he continues his journey towards complete recovery, Somnath remains steadfast in his commitment to regular checkups and scans.
With optimism in his voice, he affirmed, “Now, I am completely cured and have resumed my duties.” Somnath’s triumphant battle against cancer serves as an inspiration, demonstrating his indomitable will and unwavering resolve in the face of adversity.
