WATCH: Iranian Student Strips To Underwear At University To Protest Strict Hijab Laws
A young woman made headlines on Saturday by stripping down to her underwear at Islamic Azad University in Iran, reportedly to protest the country’s stringent Islamic dress code.
Footage of the incident, initially shared by the Amir Kabir Newsletter, shows security guards detaining the woman as onlookers recorded the event.
The video has since circulated across various Persian-language news platforms, including the Hengaw rights group, IranWire, and Amnesty International, drawing significant attention to the ongoing issues surrounding women’s rights in Iran.
In response to the incident, university spokesperson Amir Mahjob claimed on social media that the woman was found to be “under severe mental pressure and had a mental disorder” after being taken to the police station. However, details regarding her current condition remain unclear.
According to Hamshahri daily, an “informed source” suggested she might be transferred to a mental health facility for further evaluation.
Reports from the Amir Kabir newsletter allege that the woman was beaten during her arrest, prompting international outrage. Amnesty International condemned her detention, stating that “Iran’s authorities must immediately and unconditionally release the university student.”
The rights group emphasized the need for her protection from torture and called for her to be granted access to her family and legal representation.
This incident highlights the broader context of women’s rights in Iran, particularly following the protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022.
Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman, was arrested for allegedly violating hijab regulations, leading to near-nationwide protests where women defiantly removed and burned their headscarves.
