IPL 2024: Ruturaj Gaikwad Takes Over Captaincy From MS Dhoni Ahead Of CSK Vs RCB Opener
In a significant development for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named the new captain, taking the reins from the legendary MS Dhoni. The official IPL social media channels confirmed the news.
Dhoni, the 42-year-old cricketing icon, leaves behind a remarkable legacy as CSK captain. Under his leadership, the team clinched five IPL titles, most recently defeating the Gujarat Titans in the 2023 finals at Ahmedabad.
Despite these triumphs, Dhoni had previously hinted at retirement, but his IPL 2024 confirmation put those doubts to rest.
While stepping down from captaincy, Dhoni’s cricketing career with CSK continues. He boasts an impressive IPL career with 250 matches played, scoring 5,082 runs at an average of 38.79 with 24 half-centuries.
Looking ahead, CSK bolstered their squad at the recent IPL 2024 mini-auction. Key signings included exciting young talents like Rachin Ravindra (Rs. 1.8 crore) and established names like Shardul Thakur (Rs. 4 crore) and Daryl Mitchell (Rs. 14 crore).
The team also secured the experience of Sameer Rizvi (Rs. 8.40 crore), Mustafizur Rahman (Rs. 2 crore), and Avanish Rao Aravelly (Rs. 20 lakh).
