India Plans To Host 10 Matches Of 2034 FIFA World Cup: Report
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is contemplating the prospect of hosting select matches of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, slated to take place in Saudi Arabia, according to an internal communication within the national sports body.
In October, FIFA, the global governing body for football, confirmed that Saudi Arabia was the sole bidder for the 2034 World Cup, following the October 31 deadline.
The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Emergency Congress on October 18 expressed support for Saudi Arabia’s bid, a move that India also backed.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey reportedly suggested to the executive committee members that India should explore the possibility of hosting several matches during the 2034 World Cup. The envisioned scenario involves India co-hosting approximately 10 matches of the 104-match tournament.
“The president conveyed the notion that India should consider or strategize towards becoming a co-host for the 2034 World Cup,” according to the draft minutes of the AIFF Executive Committee meeting held on November 9.
FIFA’s eligibility criteria for hosting the 2034 World Cup is limited to Asia or Oceania, following its decision to hold the 2030 edition across three continents (Africa, Europe, and South America).
Saudi Arabia, having secured the bid for the 2034 World Cup, is also set to host the AFC Asian Cup in 2027, after India withdrew its bid to host the continental event.
