Historic! Uniform Civil Code Draft Submitted To Uttarakhand Government
Dehradun: On Friday, a committee appointed to draft the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) presented the document to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in Dehradun.
Headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, the panel submitted the UCC draft during a program held at Mukhya Sevak Sadan. Security measures were heightened outside Dhami’s official residence in anticipation of the draft submission.
A special four-day session of the Uttarakhand assembly is scheduled from February 5-8 to enact legislation on the UCC. Following the draft’s reception, the state government will seek approval during a cabinet meeting on Saturday, with plans to introduce the draft as a bill in the House on February 6.
If implemented, Uttarakhand will be the first state post-Independence to embrace the UCC.

About Uniform Civil Code
The Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws, applicable to all citizens regardless of their religion.
Fulfilling a significant promise made by the BJP in the lead-up to the 2022 assembly polls, passing UCC legislation marks a notable achievement for the party, securing a landslide victory for the second consecutive term in Uttarakhand.
After the BJP’s triumph, the Dhami government swiftly acted, deciding in March 2022, during the inaugural state Cabinet meeting, to form a committee for drafting the UCC.
