Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has condemned the recent attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, emphasizing the UN’s commitment to opposing violence based on race, religion, or any other form of discrimination.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Haq stated, “In all countries, we stand against any attacks on communities based on race, religion, or discriminatory means. We want to ensure that there are no racially based attacks and no incitement to racism.“
Addressing concerns about the UN’s perceived delay in response, Haq defended the organization’s stance: “We have been very clear from the outset in calling for a halt to the violence and will continue to do so. Our goal is to support a peaceful and democratic transition.”
Haq reaffirmed the UN’s readiness to assist in the rehabilitation of Hindus and other minorities affected by the violence. “We stand ready to support anyone impacted by the violence. Our support will be coordinated with the requests we receive from the government on the ground. Our Human Rights Office has stressed that those responsible for human rights violations must be held accountable.“
The UN is also prepared to assist in any investigations or provide support upon receiving a formal request from the interim government of Bangladesh. Haq added, “We are willing to assist or support any investigation upon a formal request from the interim government.“
