Head Coach Gary Kirsten Slams Pakistan’s ‘Lack of Unity’ After T20 World Cup Debacle
Following Pakistan’s disappointing T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, head coach Gary Kirsten has harshly criticized the team, stating there is “no unity” and that he has “never seen such a situation” in his extensive coaching career.
Pakistan exited the tournament at the group stage after consecutive defeats by the USA and India. The Babar Azam-led side managed only one victory, against Ireland, ending their campaign on a dismal note.
According to media reports in Pakistan, Kirsten, who led India to an ODI World Cup victory in 2011, launched a scathing critique of the team, highlighting the lack of unity.
“There is no unity in Pakistan’s team. They call it a team, but it isn’t a team. They aren’t supporting each other; everyone is separated, left and right. I have worked with many teams, but I’ve never seen such a situation,” Kirsten was quoted as saying in several media reports.
GeoSuper.tv cited sources indicating that Kirsten was also displeased with the fitness levels of the players, noting that the team lags far behind in skill compared to the rest of the world.
On Sunday, Pakistan defeated Ireland by three wickets in their final match of the T20 World Cup, held at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida. Despite this win, Pakistan had already been eliminated from the tournament following their losses to the USA and India.
The Men in Green finished third in the group stage after their lone victory against Ireland.
