Harry Potter Star And Oscar-Winning Actress Dame Maggie Smith Dies At 89
Dame Maggie Smith, beloved actress known for her iconic roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, has passed away at the age of 89, her family has confirmed.
The BBC reports that Smith, who portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films, leaves behind a lasting legacy in the world of acting.
Dame Maggie Smith passed away early Friday in a London hospital, according to a statement from her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens.
“She leaves behind two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” the statement, issued by publicist Clair Dobbs, read.
Smith, often regarded as the preeminent British actress of her generation, alongside talents like Vanessa Redgrave and Judi Dench, enjoyed a storied career.
She won the Academy Award for Best Actress and the BAFTA Award in 1969 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and earned a second Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for California Suite in 1978.
