Former Principal Of R G Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh Arrested By CBI On Corruption And Murder Charges
Kolkata: Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday after an extensive interrogation over graft charges and his alleged involvement in the rape and murder of a junior doctor.
Ghosh, who had been under the scanner for over two weeks, was taken into custody at the CBI’s CGO Complex office in Salt Lake and later transferred to the Nizam Palace by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI.
The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into corruption allegations that emerged following the tragic death of the junior doctor on August 9.
The CBI probe began after Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent at R G Kar, filed a complaint accusing Ghosh of widespread financial irregularities, including the embezzlement of government funds, corruption in medical waste management, and violations of procurement laws.
Despite his resignation from R G Kar in the wake of the incident, Ghosh was controversially reinstated as the principal of National Medical College by the state government within hours.
The Calcutta High Court, taking note of the serious allegations, directed the CBI to investigate the graft charges and ordered Ghosh to take leave.
In addition to the financial misconduct, the CBI is also delving into Ghosh’s role in the rape and murder case, as he was the hospital’s administrator at the time of the incident.
The investigation gained momentum after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the West Bengal government filed a complaint leading to the registration of an FIR.
The FIR lists Ghosh and several entities, including Ma Tara Traders and Eshan Cafe, under sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (fraud) of the Indian Penal Code, as well as Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
CBI officials previously conducted searches at Ghosh’s Beleghata residence, gathering crucial evidence. The agency’s ongoing investigation is expected to bring more details to light in this high-profile case that has rocked the medical and administrative circles in West Bengal.
