Actor and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar has recently voiced his critical opinion on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s 2023 film Animal, describing Ranbir Kapoor’s character as ‘problematic’ and stating he would not recommend the film.
His remarks come after his father, Javed Akhtar, also criticized the movie.
In a discussion with journalist Faye D’Souza, Farhan Akhtar mentioned, “Is it something that I would recommend somebody to watch? It doesn’t resonate with me. For me, I feel that the character is problematic.“

Earlier, on YouTuber Raj Shamani’s podcast, Farhan shared his thoughts on the prevalence of ‘alpha male’ characters in contemporary cinema.
He emphasized the importance of artistic freedom, stating, “I don’t believe that some things should not be shown. If someone tells me, ‘You can’t make a film like this,’ then I’ll be like, ‘Who are you to tell me what I should and should not make?’ I am permitted by the laws of this country, and I have the freedom of artistic expression to say whatever I want. What the audience wants to listen to, that they’ll decide.“
Animal, which explores a complex father-son relationship, features Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Bobby Deol. The film is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
