Dravid Breaks Silence On Ishan-Shreyas Missing Central Contract
DHARAMSHALA: India coach Rahul Dravid clarified that the team management wasn’t involved in the BCCI’s decision to remove Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the central contracts list.
He emphasized that selection remains open and encouraged both players to work hard and regain the selectors’ trust.
This news comes after the BCCI’s February announcement raised eyebrows, as both Kishan and Iyer were previously included. Reports suggest their omission stemmed from skipping domestic cricket despite BCCI directives, including those from secretary Jay Shah.
“Contracts are not my area,” Dravid stated after India’s recent win. “I focus on picking the best playing eleven, and sometimes I’m even unaware of contract details. Both players remain in contention. They need to perform well, stay fit, and force their way back into selection.”
Kishan’s Case: Missed Opportunity
Kishan’s withdrawal from the South Africa series citing mental fatigue reportedly caused friction with the BCCI. He further missed the Ranji Trophy despite opportunities, particularly with KS Bharat’s struggles. This lack of domestic form ultimately led to his exclusion from the central contracts, dropping from last year’s Grade C.
Iyer’s Situation: Fitness and Form Concerns
Shreyas Iyer’s situation is more complex. Previously a regular across formats, a string of disappointing Test performances led to his removal from the squad. He then complained of back spasms and skipped the Mumbai Ranji Trophy match, raising questions about his commitment.
