Donald Trump Safe After Gunshots Fired Near Florida Golf Club; FBI Investigating As ‘Attempted Assassination’
Donald Trump, former US President and 2024 Republican candidate, was unharmed after gunshots were fired near his Florida golf club on Sunday, according to the US Secret Service.
The FBI is treating the incident as an “attempted assassination.”
The gunman, identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, was spotted near the club armed with an AK-47-style rifle.
“The suspect was armed with an AK-47-style rifle equipped with a scope and a GoPro camera. He was positioned approximately 300-500 yards from Trump. Secret Service agents engaged the gunman, firing at least four shots. It remains unclear whether the suspect returned fire,” officials stated during a press briefing.
Secret Service agents opened fire when they saw the suspect with a firearm, but Routh managed to flee before being arrested in nearby Martin County. His motive remains unknown.
Trump was golfing at the time of the shooting and was quickly escorted to safety. He later assured supporters via email that he was safe and stated he “will never surrender.”
