Delhi Capitals Part Ways With Head Coach Ricky Ponting Ahead Of IPL 2025
In a significant move, IPL franchise Delhi Capitals has parted ways with head coach Ricky Ponting after seven years, just ahead of the mega-auction for IPL 2025.
The primary reason for this decision appears to be Delhi Capitals’ consistent failure to achieve the desired results.
Ponting, the Australian cricket legend, took over as head coach in 2018 when the team was still known as the Delhi Daredevils.
Although the team finished last in that season, they turned things around by qualifying for the playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2020, Delhi reached the IPL finals for the first time, ultimately losing to the Mumbai Indians.
However, the team did not qualify for the playoffs in the last three seasons and finished sixth in IPL 2024.
“As you move on as our head coach, we find it incredibly hard to put this into words. The four things you emphasized in every huddle – care, commitment, attitude, and effort – sum up our seven summers together,” Delhi Capitals said in a social media post.
Despite Ponting’s departure, the coaching staff retains Sourav Ganguly (Director of Cricket), Pravin Amre (Assistant Coach), James Hopes (Bowling Coach), and Biju George (Fielding Coach).
