Assam Police Cancels Leave Anticipating Protests Against Citizenship Amendment Act
As the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) readies for implementation in Assam, the Assam Police is preparing for potential protests, mandating the cancellation of all police leave from March 10.
This proactive step responds to the expectation of demonstrations from political factions opposing the controversial legislation.
The Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam recently convened meetings with police officers across districts most affected by the CAA agitation in 2019, including Dibrugarh, Jorhat, and Golaghat. Subsequently, similar gatherings were held with officers in Guwahati.
DGP GP Singh directed officers to ensure riot control equipment availability, such as tear gas and batons, at all police stations.
In an exclusive statement to India Today NE, DGP Singh refrained from commenting directly on the CAA, emphasizing instead the Assam police’s readiness for potential challenges, especially considering the imminent election announcement.
“Our preparations aim to maintain a peaceful environment in the state leading up to and during the elections, ensuring every voter’s right to vote freely and fairly,” he stated.
Furthermore, a strict directive warns officers that mishandling or misconduct will result in severe disciplinary measures, including suspension or termination.
Senior officers in each district discreetly tasked with cracking down on any activities supporting the anti-CAA movement.
