Ravichandran Ashwin Becomes Second Cricketer To Score 1000 Runs/100 Wickets In World Test Championship

Chennai: World No. 1 Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin added another milestone to his illustrious career by becoming only the second cricketer to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in the World Test Championship (WTC).

Ashwin achieved this feat during India’s first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, surpassing the 52-run mark in the first innings.

The 38-year-old off-spinner, who already has 174 wickets in WTC matches, now joins fellow Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in this elite club.

Jadeja was the first cricketer to achieve the 1000-run, 100-wicket milestone earlier this year during a Test against England in Ranchi.

Ravichandran Ashwin Eyes Multiple Records in Bangladesh Series

Ashwin is set to break more records in the ongoing series. He needs just 14 wickets to surpass Australian spinner Nathan Lyon’s tally of 187 and become the leading wicket-taker in WTC history.

Additionally, a five-wicket haul in the series would make him the first cricketer to take five or more wickets in an inning 11 times in WTC history.

With 516 Test wickets to his name, Ashwin is also closing in on legendary West Indian pacer Courtney Walsh’s record of 519 wickets. A strong performance in this series could see him move past both Walsh and Nathan Lyon (530 wickets) to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test history.

Ravichandran Ashwin Targets WTC Cycle and India-Bangladesh Records

In the current WTC cycle (2023-2025), Ashwin needs just 10 wickets to surpass Australia’s Josh Hazlewood (51 wickets) and become the leading wicket-taker.

Additionally, nine wickets against Bangladesh would allow him to break Zaheer Khan’s record of 31 wickets and become the most successful bowler in Test matches between India and Bangladesh.

As Ashwin continues to pile up records, his remarkable achievements underscore his status as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of Test cricket.
