Day After Pager Blasts, Hezbollah Walkie-Talkie Explosions Rock Beirut, Leaving 3 Dead
At least three people were killed on Wednesday after hand-held radios, allegedly used by the militant group Hezbollah, detonated across southern Lebanon and in Beirut’s southern suburbs. This marks the second consecutive day of deadly explosions in the country.
The blasts occurred just a day after another devastating incident where over a dozen people were killed and thousands wounded by pager explosions reportedly linked to Hezbollah.
One of the radio explosions took place near a Hezbollah funeral for victims of Tuesday’s blasts, which the group labeled its “biggest security breach” in history.
On Wednesday, Hezbollah also claimed responsibility for launching rockets at Israeli artillery positions, signaling escalating tensions in the region. These attacks come in the wake of the recent pager blasts that injured thousands, including Hezbollah fighters and Iran’s envoy to Lebanon.
According to a security source cited by Reuters, the radios involved in Wednesday’s explosions were purchased around the same time as the pagers. Lebanese officials suspect Israeli sabotage, alleging that explosive devices were implanted in the pagers.
A New York Times report confirmed that 1 to 2 ounces of explosive material were hidden next to the battery in each pager, with a remote trigger mechanism.
The company behind the pagers, whose devices were involved in Tuesday’s blasts, clarified that while its brand was used, the devices were actually manufactured by a Budapest-based firm.
These incidents raise serious concerns about Hezbollah’s security vulnerabilities and heighten fears of broader conflict in the Middle East.
