Arvind Kejriwal Bail Hearing Live: Supreme Court Grants Bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal In Liquor Policy Case
What’s at Stake?
Kejriwal’s legal team has filed two critical petitions: one challenging the denial of bail and another disputing the legality of his arrest by the CBI.
The court will issue two separate judgments — one from Justice Kant and another from Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
Case Background:
Arvind Kejriwal was initially detained by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering probe tied to the excise policy, which has since been scrapped. On June 26, the CBI arrested him in a related corruption case.
Although the Supreme Court granted interim bail in the money laundering case on July 12, Kejriwal remains in judicial custody for the CBI case. Of the 40 individuals implicated in these cases, only Kejriwal and businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall are still incarcerated.
What’s the Punjab Angle?
In the ongoing bail hearing, the CBI has argued against Kejriwal’s plea by highlighting a crucial “Punjab angle” in the case.
The agency claims that the AAP government in Punjab is obstructing the investigation by refusing to allow scrutiny of this angle, alleging that Delhi CM Kejriwal is influencing this decision.
According to the CBI, the case involves a distributor named Mahadev Liquors, who held a wholesale license but resisted paying bribes.
The CBI alleges that excise officials with ulterior motives closed his distilleries in Punjab. When Mahadev Liquors questioned this action, they were reportedly told that the issue was not local but centered in Delhi. Eventually, the distributor surrendered his license, and his distilleries were allowed to reopen. The CBI contends that investigating this angle is essential to the case.
