Locals, Cops Clash In Shimla Over ‘Illegal Mosque Construction’ – WATCH
Chaos unfolded in Shimla on Wednesday as a protest over alleged illegal mosque construction turned violent. Demonstrators clashed with police, toppling barricades and prompting security forces to deploy lathicharge and water cannons.
The unrest erupted in Shimla’s Sanjauli area, where residents rallied against purported illegal construction of additional floors in a mosque.
Protesters chanted slogans including “Himachal Ne Thaana Hai, Devbhoomi Ko Bachana Hai” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” defying prohibitory orders issued by authorities.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu appealed for peaceful protests, emphasizing that while people have the right to demonstrate, it must be within legal limits. He reassured that the matter is being addressed by a local municipal court and vowed that the law would prevail.
In response to the escalating tensions, Himachal Pradesh Minister Rohit Thakur echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public order.
Despite these appeals, protests intensified, with authorities struggling to control the situation.
Police increased their presence around key areas, including the Dhalli tunnel, and conducted vehicle checks to prevent further violence. Shimla remains on high alert as officials work to de-escalate the situation and restore calm.
