England All-Rounder Moeen Ali Announces Retirement From International Cricket
England’s World Cup-winning all-rounder, Moeen Ali, has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 37. The veteran cricketer made the decision after being left out of the squad for England’s upcoming white-ball series against Australia.
Reflecting on his career, Ali said it felt like the right moment to step aside for the next generation of English cricket. “I’m 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series. I’ve played a lot of cricket for England. It’s time for the next generation,” he shared with The Daily Mail, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
Ali debuted for England in an ODI against the West Indies in 2014 and has since represented his country in 298 international matches across all formats. His illustrious career includes key contributions in England’s triumphs in both the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
“I’m very proud. When you first play for England, you don’t know how many games you’ll play. So to play nearly 300… Test cricket was always proper cricket for me, but the one-dayers were so much fun under Eoin Morgan,” Ali added.
Although Ali believes he still has the ability to compete at the international level, he acknowledges the need to make way for younger talent. “I still feel I can play, but I understand how things are. The team needs to evolve, and I’m being realistic with myself,” he said.
Looking ahead, Ali will continue playing franchise cricket, including for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. He also has his sights set on a future coaching role, taking inspiration from England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum.
Ali leaves behind a remarkable legacy in English cricket, admired for his versatility as both a bowler and batsman, as well as his leadership qualities on and off the field.
