Gautam Adani has overtaken Mukesh Ambani to become the wealthiest individual in India, with a fortune of ₹11.6 lakh crore, according to the 2024 Hurun India Rich List.
The report highlights India’s rapid wealth creation, noting that the country produced a new billionaire every five days last year. Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher of Hurun India, commented, “India is emerging as Asia’s wealth creation engine!
While China saw a 25% drop in billionaires, India recorded a 29% increase, reaching an all-time high of 334 billionaires.”
Kaivalya Vohra, 21, of Zepto, is the youngest entrant on the list, followed by his 22-year-old co-founder Aadit Palicha. In a notable first, Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan made his debut on the list, thanks to the rising valuation of his IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders.
The entertainment industry saw a significant boost, with rich listers adding ₹40,500 crores in just one year, including seven new entrants.
The Ambani family has been named the most valuable business family in India, with a valuation of ₹25.75 lakh crore. The Bajaj family follows at ₹7.13 lakh crore, while the Birla family is third at ₹5.39 lakh crore.
The Adani family, valued at ₹15.44 lakh crore, does not feature in the main family list as it is still first-generation.
However, they top the list of first-generation families with active second-generation leadership, followed by the Serum Institute’s Poonawalla family, valued at ₹2.37 lakh crore.
