Mohanlal-Led AMMA Governing Body Resigns Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations In Malayalam Film Industry
The top governing body of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), led by veteran actor Mohanlal, resigned on Tuesday following explosive sexual harassment allegations within the Malayalam film industry.
The resignation came after the Hema Committee report, which was made public on August 19, revealed widespread harassment, casting couch practices, and pay disparities faced by women in the industry.
Mohanlal, 64, cited moral responsibility for stepping down, along with the executive committee, after female actors accused several members of sexual misconduct.
The report has sparked a wave of accusations against filmmakers, actors, and technicians, exposing systemic abuse in the industry.
The association released a statement expressing hope for new leadership that would renew and strengthen AMMA and announced plans for a general body meeting within two months to elect a new governing body.
Actor Siddique, AMMA’s former General Secretary, also resigned after being accused of sexual misconduct. Several prominent figures, including filmmakers Ranjith and Thulasidas, and actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, were named as abusers.
The silence of industry veterans like Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Fahadh Faasil has been heavily criticized.
