West Bengal Launches ‘Rattirer Shaathi’ Program For Women Medical Professionals Amid Safety Concerns
In response to the recent tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the West Bengal government has unveiled a new safety initiative titled ‘Rattirer Shaathi – Helpers of Night’.
This program is designed to enhance security for women working night shifts in government hospitals, medical colleges, and hostels.
The ‘Rattirer Shaathi’ initiative includes several key safety measures:
- Designated Restrooms: Women-only restrooms with secure facilities.
- Night Volunteers: ‘Rattirer Shaathi’—women volunteers—will be present during night shifts.
- Safe Zones: Areas identified with full CCTV coverage and constant monitoring.
- Mobile App: A special app with alarm features will be mandatory for all female staff, linking directly to local police stations and control rooms.
- Security Checks: Regular security and breathalyzer checks at medical institutions.
- Visakha Committees: Institutions are encouraged to establish committees to address workplace sexual harassment.
- Team Scheduling: Encouragement for organizations to schedule women in pairs or teams for enhanced safety.
- Private Sector Involvement: Private institutions are urged to adopt the ‘Rattirer Shaathi’ protocol.
This announcement coincides with the Union Health Ministry’s decision to form a committee to explore additional measures for protecting healthcare professionals.
