Here’s What PM Modi Said After Visiting Landslide-Hit Wayanad. Check Here
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited Kerala’s Wayanad district, where a devastating landslide claimed the lives of over 400 people and left many others injured.
Conducting an aerial survey before arriving on the ground, Modi inspected the hardest-hit areas and met with survivors in relief camps as well as injured patients in a hospital.
“The magnitude of this disaster is beyond comprehension. From the moment I was informed, we mobilized all possible central government resources to assist with the response. The dreams of thousands have been shattered. I’ve witnessed the situation firsthand, met with victims in relief camps, and spoke with the injured at the hospital,” the Prime Minister stated.
The landslide, which struck the Meppadi area on July 30, unleashed three consecutive waves of destruction, burying homes and businesses under debris.
Local authorities are now urging the central government to classify the landslide as a Level 3 disaster under the National Disaster Management Plan, which would unlock additional federal aid for rebuilding and recovery.
During his visit, Modi trekked through the Chooralmala region, surveying the remains of the Vellarmala Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, which was reduced to rubble.
He also crossed a 190-foot Bailey bridge erected by the army post-disaster and engaged with military personnel on the ground.
The Prime Minister spent nearly half an hour at a relief camp set up at a school in Meppadi and later visited a private hospital where injured survivors are receiving care.
His aerial survey covered key locations, including the landslide’s origin and the severely affected areas of Punchirimattam, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala.
Concluding his visit, Modi held a review meeting at the Wayanad collectorate to discuss the ongoing relief efforts and future recovery plans.
