NEW DELHI: The panel chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind has submitted a comprehensive report on ‘One Nation One Election (ONOE)’ to President Droupadi Murmu. This high-level committee advocates for the establishment of a legally viable framework to reinstate the practice of synchronized elections across the nation.
Comprising a staggering 18,626 pages, the report is the culmination of extensive deliberations with stakeholders, experts, and 191 days of research since its inception on September 2, 2023.
President Murmu received the report at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi following the panel’s meeting earlier in the day.
Drawing from insights gathered from political parties, experts, and various stakeholders, the committee unanimously underscores the transformative potential of synchronized elections for the electoral process and governance at large.
The committee’s recommendations extend to the incorporation of Article 324A to facilitate synchronized elections in local bodies such as panchayats and municipalities alongside general elections for the Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies.
Furthermore, the committee proposes that Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections be held concurrently, with municipal and panchayat polls scheduled within 100 days of their completion.
Led by Ram Nath Kovind, the panel comprises distinguished members such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, former Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad, former Chairman of the Finance Commission NK Singh, former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, and senior advocate Harish Salve.
