Ashwin Reveals How Rohit Sharma Helped Him Visit His Ailing Mother During Rajkot Test
In a heartwarming display of leadership, Indian captain Rohit Sharma played a pivotal role in supporting teammate Ravichandran Ashwin during a personal crisis.
Following his landmark 500th Test wicket in Rajkot against England, Ashwin received devastating news – his mother’s health had taken a critical turn. While the team remained unaware of the situation during the crucial third Test, Ashwin has now revealed the emotional ordeal and praised Sharma’s unwavering support.
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin described the agonizing dilemma of leaving the team amidst the series. Unable to find a commercial flight due to late hours, Ashwin was at a loss. However, Sharma stepped in decisively.
“Rohit literally asked me to stop thinking and leave to be there with my family,” Ashwin shared, revealing Sharma’s efforts to arrange a chartered flight. “He told [team physio] Kamlesh to fly with me to Chennai… Rohit called Kamlesh on our ride to the airport, checking up on me and asking him to be with me.”
Ashwin went on to express his deep appreciation for Sharma’s actions. “I cannot even think about it. The two people there were the only ones that I could talk to. What if nobody was there? … I saw an outstanding leader in Rohit Sharma that day.”
This experience significantly bolstered Ashwin’s respect for his captain. “He’s won 5 IPL titles, on par with Dhoni,” Ashwin said, highlighting Sharma’s leadership qualities. “But in such a selfish society, a man who thinks about someone else’s well-being is a rarity. My respect for him grew tremendously.”
Ashwin’s story sheds light on the human side of professional sports, showcasing the importance of camaraderie and leadership that extends beyond the field.
