After Uttarakhand, Rajasthan Likely To Table UCC Bill
After Uttarakhand, another BJP-led state is poised to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), with Rajasthan’s ministers indicating that the UCC Bill will be presented in the upcoming Assembly session following the Lok Sabha elections.
In a conversation with journalists on Tuesday, Madan Dilawar, the School Education Minister, expressed determination, stating, “Whether today or tomorrow, we are committed to introducing it. The presence of diverse laws undermines societal cohesion. A uniform law is imperative for national unity.”
Dilawar further addressed the issue of UCC in a letter to Gujarat activist Tanzeem Merani, who was protesting in Jaipur for a hijab ban in schools. He mentioned plans to propose the formation of a Draft Committee for UCC during an upcoming cabinet meeting.
Kanhaiya Lal, Cabinet Minister for Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), echoed Dilawar’s sentiments, affirming, “We will engage with the Chief Minister to expedite this. We are determined to pass and implement it in the state Assembly, setting a precedent for the entire nation.”
While acknowledging time constraints for the current session, Lal expressed confidence in implementing the UCC in the subsequent “June-July” session.
The recently tabled UCC Bill in the Uttarakhand Assembly proposes a unified legal framework for marriage, divorce, inheritance, and cohabitation, applying to all citizens irrespective of religious affiliations, except for Scheduled Tribes.
