Uttarakhand’s UCC To Regulate Live-in Relationships – Details Inside
DEHRADUN: The recent tabling of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in Uttarakhand has brought new regulations for individuals in or considering live-in partnerships. Under this proposed law:
Registration:
- Individuals in live-in relationships must register within a month of cohabitation. Failure to do so could result in imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of Rs 10,000, or both.
- Individuals below 21 require parental consent for registration.
- Registration statements, including residency status, will be filed with the Registrar and shared with local police stations for verification.
Consequences of Non-Compliance:
- Providing false information or withholding details on the registration statement can lead to a three-month jail term and a fine of up to Rs 25,000.
Rights and Protections:
- Women in deserted live-in relationships can claim maintenance through the court.
- Children born in registered live-in relationships will be considered legitimate.
Exceptions to Registration:
- Individuals already married or in another registered live-in relationship.
- Minors.
- Relationships formed through force, coercion, or deception.
Termination:
- Both partners or either one can submit a termination statement to the Registrar, with a copy provided to the other partner.
Important Note:
The bill excludes Scheduled Tribes from these provisions.
