Hindu Paksh Moves SC Seeking ASI Survey Of Wazukhanad In Gyanvapi Masjid
Following the public disclosure of the Archaeological Survey of India’s (ASI) survey report asserting that the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi was built by demolishing a grand temple, the Hindu side has submitted an application to the Supreme Court, urging the de-sealing of the ‘wazukhana’ area within the Gyanvapi complex.
This specific area had been sealed in 2022 pursuant to a Supreme Court directive.
The plea filed by the Hindu side implores the top court to permit the ASI to conduct a comprehensive survey in the ‘wazukhana’ region while safeguarding the integrity of the ‘Shivling.’
“I have filed an application in the Supreme Court asking to vacate the stay order given on 19 May 2023. ASI should be allowed to conduct a study & feature study of the ‘Wazukhana’ area. Only, after the study it will be known if it is a fountain or a Shivling…” said Hindu side Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain.
The application directs the Director General of ASI to undertake an investigation of the Shivlingam and its associated features without causing any harm.

It further requests the ASI to employ excavation and scientific methods for a thorough survey of the sealed area, submitting the findings to the court.
Highlighting the ASI’s expertise, the plea emphasizes the need for a scientific examination of the entire sealed area to ascertain the truth.
It also underscores the presence of modern constructions surrounding the Shivlingam, asserting that these artificial walls were purposefully erected to conceal original features like Peeth and Pithika.
The plea contends that this area lacks religious significance for Muslims, who purportedly consider it a fountain, and calls for a survey to determine the nature of the Shivlingam.
