AUS VS AFG: Glenn Maxwell Smashes Maiden Double Hundred In ODI World Cup

MUMBAI: On November 7, in a thrilling evening in Mumbai, Glenn Maxwell etched his name in cricket’s annals. He endured pain and became the first cricketer to accomplish a double hundred in an ODI run chase.

The stage was set with Afghanistan setting a challenging target of 291, boosted by Ibrahim Zadran’s historic World Cup century and a late surge from Rashid Khan.

Australia’s chase got off to a rocky start, losing Travis Head for a duck in just the second over.

Despite Mitchell Marsh’s aggressive start, Naveen quickly snared two wickets, and Azmat Omarzai dismissed David Warner and Josh Inglis in consecutive deliveries.

With Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, and Mitchell Starc falling quickly, Australia was reeling at 91 for seven. Pat Cummins joined Maxwell in the middle.

Maxwell’s remarkable day included some lucky breaks, like Omarzai’s review on his first ball, as well as dropped catches by Hashmatullah Shahidi and Mujeeb ur Rahman, along with a successful leg-before-wicket review that went in Maxwell’s favor.

Battling cramps that affected his running between the wickets, Maxwell tenaciously stayed on the field and unleashed a flurry of remarkable shots. He breezed past David Warner’s previous Australian World Cup record of 178, sealing the match in style with a stunning double hundred.

Maxwell’s innings featured 21 boundaries and 10 sixes in 128 deliveries, making it the fastest double hundred in World Cup history and the second fastest in ODIs.
