Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated political drama, Emergency, is set to hit theatres after the Punjab elections, having initially been scheduled for a September 6 release. India Today Digital has learned that the film’s makers are now targeting a post-election launch.
A source close to the production shared, “After meeting all the terms set by the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification), the team has decided to release the film after the Punjab elections.
The film is very close to everyone’s heart, and we want the audience to experience it. After careful consideration, we believe that releasing it during a calmer time will be the best decision, ensuring we don’t hurt anyone’s sentiments.”
The CBFC has issued a U/A certificate for Emergency with a few suggested cuts.
Directed by and starring Ranaut, the film explores the political turmoil surrounding the 1975 Emergency imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Following the release of the trailer, Emergency has generated significant buzz but has also faced backlash from Sikh organizations over allegations of misrepresentation, leading to its postponed release.
While an exact release date has not been confirmed, the filmmakers are closely monitoring the political landscape to choose an appropriate time for Emergency to debut.
